Burning Questions

Got alight"?

Sorry, but I’m all confused by Pastor Terry Jones and his Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida. First, given the church’s apparent anti-pretty-much-everything-remotely-Christian tenets – and the Pastor’s radiant skin – can I assume that the outfit’s name pays homage to the beauty bar containing ¼ cleansing cream rather than the Holy Spirit’s reputed bird of choice?

Second, I see that the pastor’s all set to throw a good, old fashioned Quran Roast over at his place this Saturday. He’s doing this because, according to the AP, he wishes to “call the attention that something is wrong,” and that “It is possibly time for us in a new way to stand up and confront terrorism.” That’s fine as far as it goes, but is this a BYOQ sort of an affair? Will there be Fellowship after? And is this a rain-or shine-event?

Third – and this is where I really get all ungepatched – Pastor Jones goes on to say, “The real problem is not the politicians or even Islam… the real problem is not our educational system that wants to remove God from every part of our society. The problem is the church has laid down. The church has given up.”

You see my confusion? What exactly was it that the church laid down, when did it lay it down, and where? And if, as the pastor plainly says, the problem lies not with Islam but rather with the churches and their annoying habit of placing things down willy-nilly and then giving up on one thing or another, oughtn’t Jones be planning, say, a Yuletide Bible Roast on December 25?

Look, rather than attempt a convoluted reference to Fahrenheit 451 and Pastor Jones’ summer reading list, I’ll just go ahead and wonder, quietly and to myself, if he’s familiar with another bit of numerical literature, specifically Matthew 7.1-2: “Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.”

Stick around kids! There’s Tater Tot Hot Dish with vitriol and invective downstairs, so help yourselves!
