A Happy Ending For Yurt. Bring Tissues.

Kevin McClain loved his dog, Yurt, a sheltie-collie cross. When paramedics found him unconscious in his car in a Walmart parking where he’d been living he was very ill with lung cancer but Yurt was healthy, well-fed and groomed. McClain was taken to hospital and Yurt went to an animal shelter. McClain had raised Yurt from a pup and they pined for one another until paramedic Jan Erceg brought them together one last time. Ercig also volunteered at the animal shelter and was transporting McClain from the hospital to a hostel when he mentioned his beloved dog. She arranged for Yurt to visit McClain.
Erceg began to cry as she remembered his final words to Yurt. “He told her ‘behave. You behave.’ … That was his acceptance — he knew that was going to be the last time he saw her.”
Yurt has since found a good home with Eric and Kate Ungs of Marion, Iowa whose black lab, Kaia had died of old age. They read about Yurt on a website and when they met her it was love at first sight. But at nighttime Yurt still seems to miss the man who took such good care of her when he could barely care for himself.
