Governor Peter Shumlin is using his bully-pulpit to support a local folk artist who’s embroiled in a trademark battle with a national fast-food chain.

Over the past 10 years, Bo Muller-Moore has run his T-shirt business in Montpelier around the phrase “Eat More Kale”

After filing for a federal trademark in August to prevent copycats, he’s now engaged in what could be a legal fight with Chick-Fil-A whose slogan is “Eat Mor’ Chickin.”

Now, Governor Shumlin has launched ‘Team Kale,’ a campaign to raise money for Muller-Moore’s defense fund.

Shumlin says the effort is designed to send Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A a message.

(Shumlin) “Don’t interfere with ‘Buy Local.’ Don’t mess with our effort to create jobs one job at a time. This is as good example as any of how we create jobs in Vermont.”

Shumlin says that Vermonters know the difference between kale and chicken, and that Muller-Moore’s business represents what he calls the state’s ‘renaissance of local agriculture.’
